A vocabulary game disguised as ninja training.

I built Vocabulary Hokage to help my niece prepare for the vocabulary portion of a science high school entrance exam. I wanted her to study, but more importantly, I wanted her to want to study.

She loved Naruto, so I turned vocabulary practice into ninja training.

Instead of simply answering vocabulary questions, the player becomes a student ninja learning new jutsu. Words become techniques to master, vocabulary levels become ninja ranks, and the entire experience is wrapped in a Naruto-inspired progression system.

The vocabulary is organized by frequency of use in modern English, starting with more common words and progressing toward increasingly uncommon and challenging words. To advance, the player must get a perfect score on the current level. It’s just like completely mastering a jutsu before learning the next one.

Each playthrough is randomized. Questions are shuffled, and the answer choices are randomized as well, so repeating a level requires actually knowing the words rather than simply memorizing the order.

The progression

Genin → Chunin → Jonin → Hokage → Legendary Ninja

Players can review levels they have already unlocked and practice as many times as they need.

The Naruto theme runs throughout the experience, with ninja terminology, characters, ranks, and progression turning what could have been a traditional vocabulary quiz into a small game.

And then came the plot twist:

She passed.

After my younger niece saw her playing, she wanted to try it too and started playing the game herself.

What began as a study tool for one niece became a fun little game that the whole family could enjoy. I had just as much fun making it as they did playing it.
